Computer Software


The following programs are available free from the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service and the Oklahoma State University Department of Animal Science and are intended for use by individuals. Please review the instructions before downloading files.

Instructions

After you have selected the program you wish to obtain, complete the following steps for each program.

  1. To obtain the program instructions, click on the Publication No. in the first column.
    This will allow you to save the corresponding .PDF file, read it and print it for later reference.
  2. To obtain the software, click on the Name of the program in the second column of the table above. This will allow you to save the corresponding .zip file to your hard drive (or a floppy disk*). We suggest you create a new folder on you hard-drive for each program and assign it the name of the program. Save the .zip file to that location. After the program files are extracted to the new folder using WinZip simply double click on the application file with the .bat extension (no extension will be displayed in Windows Explorer)

Many of the programs listed below are Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. These additional instructions are included for those programs.

If you are not familiar with Lotus commands and general keyboard functions, you may need to view these additional instructions.

OSUNRC2002 is a ration formulation program combined with the features that simultaneously calculate the nutrient requirements for energy, protein, calcium and phosphorus for beef cattle in confinement. The nutritional requirements are derived from the Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle (NRC) published by the National Academy of Sciences in 1984 and 1996. The program contains a feed library, which holds up to 103 different ingredients and their nutrient composition. Twenty nutrients plus dry matter and cost are included for each feed. Formulas may contain from 1 to 20 different feeds. The user can easily switch from formulating on a dry matter basis to formulation on an "as fed" basis. To develop a formulation the user describes the body and sex type, the body weight of the cattle and inputs expected feed intake. Rate of gain is projected using the calculated net energy for maintenance and gain. The rations nutrient specifications are compared to the calculated or tabular requirements.

OSU Cowculator is a Windows based Computer software program designed to assist cattlemen in making informed decisions associated with beef cownutrition. Animal criteria (such as cow weight, body condition, stage ofproduction and breed), as well as the feed and forage library can be customized to each operation or to specific scenarios within an operation. Animal requirements and performance predictions are based on years of research data,including the 1996 and previous versions of the National Research Council'sNutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle.

Cowgame is a beef herd genetic simulation program. The player starts with a fifty cow herd and makes selections based upon weaning weight, feedlot gain or yearling weight. The next year's calf crop is generated during each session and the genetic information is saved so that future selections can be made. AI sires can also be used.

NEWSWINE has two functions/ The first is to caluclate the nutritional composition of a feed mixture. The second is to look up some of the nutritional requirements for swine. By using the two functions together it is possible to develop a ration wich is correctly balanced for a specific body weight and type of swine.

Beefgain: Feedlot Gain Simulation

OSU FEEDLOT is a program which simulates feedlot cattle performances useful to feedlot owners, financial institutions, prospective cattle feeders and animal scientists. The program is based on two sets of equations: (1) a set of equations which predict feed intake based on description of the cattle, and (2) the net energy equations which predict gain based on the energy content of the inputted rations. The program calculates feed and gain daily and cumulates gain from feedlot in weight. This technique makes it pssible to use multiple rations, and to switch ration for either nutritional or financial reasons on a daily basis or at given cattle weights. Another advantage is that factors affecting either feed intake or maintenance requiremants of the cattle may be varied by the month of the year. 
No instructions available XBREEDING Cross Breeding Simulation

From data entered by the user, this program generates profit or loss by industry segment for purebreds, two-breed terminal, three-breed terminal, three-breed rotational and three-breed special cross. It is capable of using up to 14 different breeds of cattle.
