Students Train and Sale Geldings in the OSU Equine Program

The OSU equine program has grown significantly over the past year. With a new building, new manager and three new courses, students have more opportunities than ever for hands-on learning with horses. This spring, five students began the breaking and training process with two and three-year-old geldings. Under the guidance of Natalie Baker and Dr. Steven Cooper, these students learned how to start colts under saddle and lay a solid foundation for future owners to build upon.

The purpose of this course is not only to teach students proper techniques for starting young horses, but also to learn sales and marketing tactics. The end goal is to sell these five horses at the A- Ranch sale on June 17. Students aided with photographing and videoing the horses and most will be present to watch their horses sell.

“Working with the Armitage family is a great example of alumni helping current students succeed,” Baker said. “The opportunity for students to take on a project, work hard all semester, and witness the results of their effort in a professional horse sale is outstanding.”

The five horses were all born and bred at the OSU Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center. If you are interested in purchasing a horse, please visit us at http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/events/cowhorse-classic!
