Independence Day Pet Safety Tips

Pets can bring so much joy into our lives and are considered by many as a part of the family. People take their pets with them while hiking, running errands, on vacation, and to family events. While having our pets around is fun, July 4th activities are something they should be excluded from.

More animals become lost during the July 4th week than any other time of year. In fact, July 5th is the busiest day of the year for most animal shelters across the U.S. Why is this? Fireworks create stress and anxiety for many animals. While fireworks are all in good fun, it is important to understand that our four legged companions do not see it that way. All they know is that a bright, loud, sparkly, scary monster is coming to get them and they attempt to flee the scene.

Make sure your pets are safe this holiday weekend by following these tips from the ASPCA:

  • Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them.
  • Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals.
  • Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach.
  • Keep your pets on their normal diet.
  • Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it.
  • Keep citronella candles, insect coils and tiki torch oil products out of reach.
  • Never use fireworks around pets!
  • Keep pets away from loud, crowded fireworks displays.
  • Be prepared in the event that your pet does escape.
