Course Structure:
2 class periods/week (TTH 12:30-1:20)
1 lab period every other week (TH 1:30-5:20)
Course Objectives:
2. Discuss proper management practices employed in swine operations and their impact on profitable pork production.
3. Develop skills for evaluating and solving management problems of a swine operation.
4. Encourage utilization of computer technology in making sound management decisions.
5. Complement management decisions with science-based principles.

Exams: A Midterm Exam (October 15th) and Final Exam (Thursday, December 12th, 10:00 am) will be administered. Each exam is worth 200 pts.5 Quizzes - 200 pts (17%) Grading: A – 90 and above
1 Midterm Exam - 200 pts (17%) B – 80 – 89.9
1 Final Exam - 200 pts (17%) C – 70 – 79.9
5 Case Studies - 500 pts (42%) D – 60 – 69.9
Sow Project - 100 pts (8%) F – below 59.9
Quizzes: Six quizzes will be given during the semester, each worth 40 points. You may drop you lowest quiz score. Total quiz points will equal 200 points.
Case Studies: Case studies involving
"real-world" problems will be assigned during the semester. Students
will be asked
to analyze the problem and make management recommendations using the information
obtained in class and
selected computer software. The case studies will address major decisions
related to herd management,
nutition, breeding, reproductive management, selection, health, cash flow,
and facilities. Total case study points will equal 500 points.
Sow Project: Sow project will be worth 100 points. More information will be provided during the semester.
Examinations: Examination absences must be
approved in advance. Please submit absence requests in writing.
Unapproved absences for eaxams will be counted as zeros. University
sponsored events, severe illness,
and serious family issues are the only excuses for missing an exam.
In those instances, a make-up exam
will be available.
Attendance: No attendance
will be taken during lectures. Attendance will be taken during laboratory
periods. More than one unexcused absence from lab will result in a loss
of a letter grade. Attendance
is required on the field trips.
