These sheep originated in northwestern Iran and northeastern Turkey. This region in Iran is known as Azarbayjan and is typlified by dry, cold mountain weather .The fleece of this sheep is red and have sections of black red or light red. The Ghezel are used for both meat and wool in this region. The males are usually hornless and the females are always so.
Birth weight, weaning weight, weight at six months, average daily gain from
birth to weaning (ADG1) and average daily gain from weaning to siz months
(ADG2) are 4.47, 20.88, 33.14 Kg, 0.184 and 0.134 gr. In research conducted
with this breed Nooriyan Sooror (2000) reported that year of birth had significant
effect on all traits, exept on average daily gain from birth to weaning weight,
sex of lamb affected only birth weight, and type of birth affected only birth
weight, weaning weight and body weight at 6 months age of dam had no significant
influence on any trait.wherease herd effect was significant for all traits.
Genetic parameters was estimated ( h2 and (co) variance) in this
study.this parameters stimated by use of DFRMEL and animal model.
