The Danube is a light riding and draft horse found in Bulgaria. The breed originated during the 1920's from crossing the Nonius stallions with local half-bred Nonius-Anglo mares. They are notorious for their great endurance and not being fickle about their food. The Danube is use when breeding sport horses in Bulgaria because of some valuable traits, qualities wanted in a sport horse.

 

They are usually black or bay. They are generally very calm and gentle with a mild temperament allowing for various hauling jobs. The Danube as a threatened breed because of mixed breeding. Breeders are working on increasing the quantity of horse without sacrificing the horse's traits, inherited from a pure bloodline.
