Food Safety

Food Science Major; Food Safety Degree Option; Oklahoma State University; Department of Animal Science

The food safety degree option offered through the food science major is one of only a few that exist in the country. The goal of the option is to produce students who are uniquely qualified to take on roles in the food manufacturing sector. It combines knowledge of food science with critical issues relating to food safety, government regulations and food safety programs being required by government and industry leaders.

The food safety option includes curriculum that is inclusive to the entire food manufacturing chain, from production agriculture to post-harvest processing through retail distribution channels. The program will encompass all food safety needs, domestically and internationally. Students will have the opportunity to be engaged with hands-on learning and research projects.

Students in our food safety option will earn certifications in HACCP, FSMA, and GFSI programs, such as Safe Quality Foods (SQF) and British Retail Consortium (BRC), to ensure they are 'industry ready' upon graduation. Students in this degree option also are training to perform internal audits necessary in the food industry.
