Sage Becker

Sage Becker grew up in Keota, Iowa, as a fifth-generation farmer on both sides of her family. She grew up raising and showing pigs, sheep, goats and chickens in 4-H and FFA. Aside from showing, she became involved in the agricultural industry by helping her dad in commercial swine finishing operations.

“I enjoy being around, learning about and working with animals in some way, shape or form,” Becker said.

She said the animal science program and undergraduate research opportunities drew her to OSU in the first place.

“When deciding where to go, I knew that Oklahoma State had a strong undergraduate research program and I wanted to get involved with and do research,” said Becker. “I chose the department of animal science because it offered me the ability to study within my areas of interest and conduct research in animal science-related topics.”

Becker is a junior pursuing a degree in animal science with an animal biotechnology option. She said she grew up with a rare genetic bone marrow failure disorder, which peaked her interest in studying genetics. With her degree option, she has the chance to learn more about animal science topics, like genetics, on the molecular level.

Becker is very active in research and student activities on campus. She is a member of Swine Club, Block and Bridle, National Society for Collegiate Scholars, and St. John’s Catholic Church. She is also an undergraduate research scholar under Dr. Guolong Zhang and an academic tutor through the LASSO center.

Becker plans to earn a master’s and doctorate degree in animal immunogenetics, to continue studying and researching immunology and genetics. She hopes to use her degrees to solve problems facing the animal agricultural industry, by working as an immunologist for an animal health company or becoming a college professor.
