Undergraduate Degree Programs

Our department has a lot to offer anyone considering a degree in animal science or food science, including prominent judging teams, a large number of student organizations, an undergraduate research program, and facilities that other colleges cannot provide. We also have one of the largest majors and the largest departmental scholarship offering on campus.

Within our department, a student can earn a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (BSAG) in animal science or food science. With each degree, you have the opportunity to select an option (predefined emphasis area) so that your plan of study meets your needs.

There are eight study options within the animal science degree: biotechnology, production, pre-vet (or pre-med), business (or pre-law), livestock merchandising, ranch operations, animal science/agricultural communications double major, and animal science/agricultural education double major.

Food science contains four study options: food science, food industry, meat science, and food safety.

Departmental Highlights

Scholarship Offerings

Our department provides the largest scholarship offerings on campus. Each year, we award our undergraduate students around $400,000 in scholarships. The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources awards an additional $600,000 to students within the college, and Oklahoma State University provides over $320 million in scholarships, grants, and financial aid to students each year.

 

Undergraduate Research

The department’s Undergraduate Research Scholars Program provides students with valuable hands-on experience working on cutting-edge research projects side-by-side with faculty, graduate students, research technicians and research unit managers. The program builds a solid foundation in research methods to better prepare students for industry and academic careers in animal or food sciences.

 

Prominent Judging Teams

Our departmental sponsors five judging teams; dairy cattle, equine, livestock, meat, and meat animal. They have each established enviable national reputations in competition. Our judging teams have earned over 40 national championships, which is more than any other university in the country. Our department also has a competitive Quadrathlon team! Students from every background are encouraged to participate.

 

Fully-Equipped Facilities

We have fully-functioning farms, as well as hands-on teaching and research facilities encompassing 13,000 acres. Oklahoma State University is one of the very last land-grant institutions to maintain farm units for hands-on learning. Students also get access to the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Product Center (FAPC) through classes, research, and internships.
